Trusted Across North County for Seamless Moving Experiences
Must Have Movers is a licensed California household mover based in Carlsbad, and North County is where most of our work happens. We move families and businesses between the coastal cities — Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar — and inland to San Marcos, Vista and Escondido, along with the communities in between.
Every city here moves differently. Coastal condo buildings ration elevator time, older beach blocks mean long carries from street to door, and inland hillside homes come with steep driveways a truck cannot always climb. We plan around the building, not just the inventory, so the crew arrives knowing what needs to come apart and where the truck can park. Whether you are moving house or relocating a business, you get the same crew from the first box to the last.
Why Choose Must Have Movers for Your North County Move?
Because you can check everything we tell you. California household movers are licensed by the Bureau of Household Goods and Services, which took over from the Public Utilities Commission on July 1, 2018. Our permit is CAL-T #192578, and you can verify it — or any other company’s — by calling BHGS on (916) 999-2041.
Before you sign with anyone, insist on three things: a written “Not to Exceed” price that caps what you can be charged, a valuation coverage option you chose yourself, and a CAL-T number you can actually read. Our guide to what “licensed and insured” really means explains each one. And if your closing dates do not line up, your belongings can go into our own warehouse storage between the two legs, so everything is handled twice instead of four times.

North County Cities We Serve
Every North County city moves a little differently, and the crew plans for it before moving day. Vista, Escondido, Rancho Santa Fe, Fallbrook and Poway are covered too — there, the drive between your two addresses is usually the biggest factor in the bill. See all our service areas or how our local moving works.
Why Does a Short North County Move Cost More Than Expected?
Because of one state rule. Under Item 36 of the BHGS Maximum Rate Tariff 4, billable time on a California household move is loading, plus unloading, plus double the driving time between your two addresses. In central San Diego that barely registers. In North County, where Oceanside to Escondido is a 30–35 minute drive, it can be the biggest line on the bill: that drive appears as 60–70 minutes.
So the distance between your homes matters more than the size of your home. A Carlsbad-to-Oceanside move bills about 30 minutes of driving; Carlsbad to Escondido about 50–60. Start at 8 a.m. to keep the drive out of SANDAG’s peak periods of 6–10 a.m. and 3–7 p.m., when every minute in traffic counts twice. Our Carlsbad rate guide shows the hourly rates behind it.
Do You Need a Permit to Park a Moving Truck in North County?
For a normal move, no — every North County city exempts a vehicle that is actively loading or unloading. San Marcos bars heavy commercial vehicles from residential streets unless they are loading or unloading goods (SMMC 12.20.160). Escondido exempts pickups and deliveries of goods to a nearby building (§ 28-168(c)). Encinitas restricts RVs and trailers overnight, not working trucks (EMC § 14.40.145).
The rules worth planning around apply to a truck left parked: the 72-hour limit on one spot, street sweeping on both streets, and early-morning oversized-vehicle hours — 2–5 a.m. in Carlsbad (free permits from the Police Department on 442-339-2119) and an early-morning restriction in Oceanside (Parking Enforcement: 760-435-5195).
How Much Drive Time Will Your North County Move Bill?
Under the state tariff, the drive between your two addresses is billed twice. These are typical off-peak drive times on I-5, SR-78 and SR-56 — check your own two addresses, and allow more if the drive falls in the 6–10 a.m. or 3–7 p.m. peaks.
| Typical North County move | Off-peak drive | Billed drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Within one city (e.g. Carlsbad to Carlsbad) | About 10 minutes | About 20 minutes |
| Carlsbad ↔ Oceanside, Carlsbad ↔ Encinitas | About 15 minutes | About 30 minutes |
| Carlsbad ↔ San Marcos, Encinitas ↔ Del Mar | About 15–20 minutes | About 30–40 minutes |
| Carlsbad ↔ Escondido, Oceanside ↔ San Marcos | About 25–30 minutes | About 50–60 minutes |
| Oceanside ↔ Escondido, Del Mar ↔ Escondido | About 30–35 minutes | About 60–70 minutes |
Loading and unloading are added on top at their actual length, with a three-hour minimum. Our guide to how long a local move takes shows how the rest of the bill is counted.
