These are booking windows, not deadlines. A good mover can often absorb a short-notice job midweek. What no mover can do is invent a second crew for the last Saturday in July.

SDSU housing moved students in across three days in late August this year. UC San Diego runs its own move-in window in September. Add the private-rental churn around both campuses and you get a second spike a fortnight after the PCS peak has crested.
Month-end lease turnover, every single month
San Diego leases overwhelmingly start on the first. That pushes moves into the last two or three days of the month, and the last Friday and Saturday of the month are the first slots to go all year round — December included.
The dates that disappear first
- Last Saturday of the month, June through August. Assume these are gone six to eight weeks out.
- Last Friday of any month. Two to four weeks out, year round.
- The day after a public holiday. Long weekends get used as moving weekends.
- The first Saturday of the month. Second choice for anyone who missed the last one.
The mirror image is useful: a Tuesday or Wednesday in the middle of the month is the easiest date in San Diego to book, in any season, usually at short notice.
If you are already inside the window
Short notice is not a lost cause. It just changes what you optimise for.
- Offer flexibility on the day, not the week. “Any weekday that week” gets you scheduled far faster than “the 30th, and only the 30th.”
- Ask about a morning slot. Crews that finish a small job early can sometimes start a second one, so the first slot of the day has the most give in it.
- Cut the packing from the critical path. Packing is what adds two weeks. Pack the non-essentials yourself and book the crew for the furniture and the truck.
